Tennessee Alcohol Server Training — 100% Online

Complete the training portion of your Tennessee Server Permit requirements with ABC Server Training. This online alcohol-awareness course is for bartenders, servers and other employees who serve alcoholic beverages where Tennessee requires a Server Permit.

ABC Server Training is listed in the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission's certified online Server Permit training programs (PDF) (opens in a new tab) . TABC is the state agency that regulates the permit process.

Your purchase is for training. Completing the course does not automatically give you a Tennessee Server Permit. You must also complete the state's application process and satisfy its permit requirements.

Your Training Course and Your Server Permit Are Different

Online training is one requirement. State permit issuance is a separate step.

ABC Server Training: the course

Complete the TABC-certified alcohol-awareness training and receive the appropriate completion documentation. The Tennessee course price is $39.99 . A training completion document is not the state-issued Server Permit.

Tennessee TABC: the Server Permit

Complete the TABC/RLPS application process, meet the state's eligibility requirements and pay the separate $20 state application fee . TABC reviews the application and issues the permit when its requirements are satisfied.

Training for covered alcohol-service roles

Who Needs Tennessee Server Training?

TABC describes the Server Permit requirement as applying to service of liquor, wine and high-gravity beer at establishments with an On-Premise Consumption (Liquor-by-the-Drink) License.

Serving alcohol in a covered role?

This training is relevant to employees whose duties require a Tennessee Server Permit, including:

  • Bartenders and cocktail servers.
  • Restaurant servers and waitstaff.
  • Hotel and hospitality employees serving alcohol.
  • Catering and other covered alcohol-service employees.

Check the role and the establishment

The requirement depends on the work you perform and the establishment's licensing. This page does not treat every restaurant, retail or hospitality job as the same permit category. Confirm the requirements for your position with your employer and TABC.

The Tennessee requirements

Tennessee Server Permit Requirements at a Glance

Plan for training, the application and the state-issued permit — not just the end of the course.

18 +

Minimum applicant age

Tennessee Server Permit applicants must be at least 18 years old and meet the state's other eligibility requirements.

61 days

New-server permit deadline

New servers have a one-time 61-day period from the original hire date to meet the requirements and obtain the permit. Changing employers does not restart it.

3.5 hours

Approximate training time

Allow approximately 3.5 hours for the approved online training. Completing training does not complete the separate state application process.

1 year

Training recency

Required training must have been completed within one year of the Server Permit application date.

$20

Separate state application fee

The TABC Server Permit application fee is paid to the state separately from your ABC Server Training course purchase.

2 years

Current permit validity

Server Permits issued January 1, 2025 or later are valid for two years from issuance. Check the expiration date on your state permit record.

These are key requirements, not a determination of eligibility. Review the official TABC application and restrictions before applying.

Training, documentation, application, permit

How Tennessee Server Training and Permitting Work

Complete the training and the separate state process. TABC — not the training provider — issues your permit.

01 / TRAIN

Complete approved online training

Enroll in the Tennessee course and successfully complete the required alcohol-awareness training.

02 / DOCUMENT

Keep your training record

Receive the appropriate training completion documentation. Retain it for your application and employment records.

03 / APPLY

Complete the TABC/RLPS process

Complete the state's Server Permit application, provide the required information and pay the separate $20 state application fee.

04 / MAINTAIN

Keep your permit current

After TABC issues your permit, retain it and follow Tennessee's requirements for continued permitted employment and renewal.

Training completion is not permit approval.

You still need TABC to issue your Server Permit. Meet the original-hire deadline and check your permit status through the state process.

Keep your RLPS application ID available. TABC's training-roster process uses the student's application ID. Follow your enrollment instructions for when to provide it so your training can be associated with your application.

Keep training and permit dates separate

Your Tennessee Server Permit: Validity and Renewal

Server Permits issued January 1, 2025 or later are valid for two years from the date of issuance. Use the expiration date shown on your TABC permit record, particularly when checking an older permit.

For continued permitted work, plan ahead for the TABC/RLPS renewal or application process. Complete the required approved training within one year of the application, provide the requested information and pay the applicable state fee.

Retaking a training course does not itself renew the state permit. Follow TABC's instructions and confirm that the state has issued your current permit.

For Employers: Track Training and State Permits

Training enrollment is one part

Group enrollment helps organize course access for covered employees. Each employee still needs to meet Tennessee's individual Server Permit requirements; a group course purchase does not issue permits.

Keep permit records available

TABC states that On-Premise Consumption licensees must keep copies of issued Server Permits available for review. Track employee training, the original-hire deadline and permit expiration dates.
